Escape
By Yasmin Tubritt
Break down those doors they built to keep you in.
The metal doors that closed off your mind.
The wooden ones that slammed shut
on your imperfect body and
the iron grille that sliced through your lips
and sealed your tongue.
No longer be a willing accomplice
to the destruction of your true self.
You're not here to acquiesce
to the desires of a man,
to quieten your voice lest
your roar awakens the demons within you.
Scream your fist through the glass,
and use the splinters to write
your story in blood.
Your sweat and tears roll back to you.
They are yours now
to do with what you will.
Use them to rise.
