To the Little Girl with the Big Mouth

By: Isabella Hurlbut

You sit in moms bed and yell for her to come and get you with a smile on your face /

I guess you didn’t care about being scared to ask for what you wanted /

You never even asked, i don’t think / you always screamed /

With long blonde hair / always filled with knots / you had ocean eyes / and a hard mouth /

But now everything about this older version of you has gone soft /

I wonder if you would care / that this body is not as small as it used to be /

I wonder if you would equate love to a pants size / or skipping meals /

I don’t think you would /

You didn’t care about people loving you /

You only cared about how much paint you could fit on your hands /

Or oreos in your pockets / or flowers on your windowsill /

You twirled and twirled and never thought twice about the skin you were in /

“Body? What body?” you’d say /

“I am a bird today / and maybe tomorrow I will be the sun /

I want to be biggest star, you see” /

To the little girl with the big mouth /

You were right all along /

We were never meant to shrink /

We will always be the biggest star
