Tell us about this painting.

Set on Treaty 1 territory now known as the Pembina Valley in Manitoba, Canada lay stone circles or tipi rings. This painting is my form of reconciliation and a reminder of the people that lived here. If you look closely you can find faces among the stones which was inspired by a song my mother wrote (Even the Stones Cry). They represent the Chippewa and the Swampy Cree and all the people that shared memories on this land before us.

How has creating art supported your healing journey?

For me, and I suppose for most people, creating art is a form of self expression. I have always been a person with “Big Feelings” but don’t often find a way to let them out. Painting helps me to do that.

What does it mean for you to roar? Can you share about a time you overcame feeling silenced?
To roar would be to overcome some obstacle that’s in my way, whether that be a policy or a person. Sometimes even the smallest actions can start something bigger. My painting, Even the Stones Cry, was meant to speak out about the injustices done to our indigenous people. Although it is just a small way of overcoming silence, it is still a start to something much louder.

What prompted your art style?
I am a self-taught artist working mainly with acrylics. I love to paint what I’m feeling and have experienced. My style has definitely evolved over the years. I’ve stopped caring so much on making it as realistic as possible and have begun to just paint with my feelings.

What advice would you give to artist that want to pursue their craft, but don't know where to begin?
The number one thing I would say to a new artist looking for advice is, create what you know. Paint, draw, or mold something that has meaning to you. Think of something that you’ve experienced and feel passionate about and let it out through your art. Just don’t over think it, the right idea will come to you when its ready. Start by sticking to ideas that are close to your heart. That’s how true meaning gets across and viewers can feel that.

What is one thing you want women to know today?
I often wish I could tell my younger self not to feel threatened by other women’s success. It in no way depreciates your own or your potential. By supporting other women and encouraging them it will in fact help to lift you up further.
