it’s something like four a.m. and they’re on
their way to the place she’s been staying and
the cab driver hands her a red sucker in the shape
of a heart that she wants to eat but can’t
get the stubborn wrapper to open

the boy is not a stranger but close enough and
the girl says virginity is a myth anyway the girl
has already been told she is a woman but doesn’t
believe it wants the evidence wants some quiet
victory

the girl searches for her politics in every crease
of his body and thinks this is what feminism is or
could be but the best part is that she will never
see him again can forget his name his hands the fact
that he likes leonard cohen too

there isn’t much to be said they kick off
their shoes and when it’s over fall asleep skin stuck
together hair damp from the fever that is
july on the mediterannean the night stretches
on over two weathered bodies

in the morning the girl feels like running until reaching
the sea and then swimming until reaching the bottom and
then digging until clawing grasping holding the thing
that she thought she would find lying around in the
dark at four a.m. but didn’t
